Catalyst-Gaming was a community primarily focused around custom roleplay gamemodes for the game Garry's Mod.
The community hosted several popular gamemodes including Harbour RolePlay (HRP), Half-Life 2 RolePlay (HL2RP), GMR (GMod Racer), OCRP (Orange Cosmos RolePlay).
Started in 2010 by RoflWaffle - the community grew to having a max of 76,592 members before mostly shutting down in 2015.
I primarily worked on web development and server infrastructure to support the game servers, website, and APIs that were set up to provide various integrations and features.
Some particularly notable features I worked on:
- Designed resilient and high performance infrastructure which supported many game servers and web services
- A server availability and status monitor that provided public views into server performance and occupancy
- Server backend management functionality to allow restricted administration of community servers
- An e-commerce platform of "credits" to support purchasing community perks and in game cosmetics
I credit being able to learn by building systems and features for this community to be instrumental in my early career.
Today, the forum is kept online and available only for people who had accounts before the last gameserver was taken offline. Login is available through Steam SSO which was the last significant change I made to the forum. This was done to prevent account theft and eliminate the need for password recovery.
